Day 4 -Welcome at Kapalamula Primary

One of the outdoor classes. 119 pupils sitting on stones

It was with great excitement that we headed to Kapalamula Primary School. Located about 9 km outside of Balaka, we arrived to be greeted by the children singing and marching.  Absolutely breath taking and a hint of the way we were to be treated over our entire stay in Malawi.  The people of every community we went to were so kind and generous to us.  Even the families that had little money were very generous in terms of friendship and also by providing food and drinks.
When we entered the school 'office' we were surprised to see all the staff photos on display that we had sent over the year before. Amazing! We were introduced to the PTA and even one of the local village Chiefs!  There were numerous speeches (this becomes a theme too!)

We had a tour of the school and were amazed by the class sizes.  In one class there were 219 pupils, half of which were being taught outside.  There were not of things on the wall and most classes did not have chairs, the pupils sat on the floor.  We were taken to back to the staffroom and FANTA and Cokes were served.  Strangely, the staff sat in one area while we were in the part set aside for the Head Teacher. Later on the week we insisted that we all sit together with the staff.
